Not to be confused with “OZZIE OSBOURNE” The Osborne Lights are a spectacle NOT to be missed if you are visiting Florida from now until the New Year.(They End on Sunday 4th. January 08).

A Family called Osborne started decorating their own home in Arkinsaa in the 90s. They grew so much that the crowds of people who travelled for miles to see them were causing traffic jams and the neighbourhood complained until they were stopped. Every year thousands of Dollars were raised for Charities.

When Disney heard this they decided to offer The Osborne lights a place at MGM, which is now Hollywood Disney Studios. Over 1 MILLION lights now are in place with most of the original lights still in the display.

Disney Hollywood hold this wonderful event every year. Every Fifteen minutes the masses of lights and displays ”Dance” to Christmas Tunes as the SNOW Falls around you. Only in AMERICA but it is certainly a site everyone should see. It is FREE with the admission into the Park during these Christmas dates.

We are fortunately arriving on the 4th of January and will head straight for DHS to catch the last night and it will help us get into the Florida Time Mode, a great way to start anyones holiday.

Just a couple of “Different” Highlights for Xmas at Disney. With all of the Regular Disney Xmas Shows, something a little different and just as spectacular, we recommend The Candlelight Procession at Epcot. It is on every year at the American Gardens theatre. It tells the story od Christmas and is read by different celebrity narrators each night. The Choir and the 50 piece orchestra are fantastic, making the hairs on your neck stand out. There are usually 3 shows each evening and start a the end of November until the end of December,

At Downtown Disney there is an unusual and remarkable event from 7th. Nov - 9th. Nov where you can see the amazing pictures of Master Pavement Artists. The pictures have to be seen to be believed. Your children can join in as there is a section for everyone to have a go. There is also live music which creates a real Xmas atmosphere. Again, something a little different and the best thing about Downtown is there is NO Parking Charges!!!

    A Very Happy Christmas Everyone.

  • ICE! at Gaylord Palms - Fancy Visiting a Different Attraction this Christmas Period?

If you are visiting Orlando over the Christmas period and would like a break from Disney, or just fancy something completely different,  why not visit the Ice attraction at Gaylor Palms Resort and Convention Centre.  ICE is a exhibit of  winter wonderland made out of nearly Two Million Pounds of Ice and kept at 9 degrees Fahrenheit. Be prepared and dress appropriately: closed-toe shoes and trousers are required. Hooded oversized parker coats are provided for your warmth and comfort inside the attraction - you may look silly wearing them, but believe me you do need them!

Experience three-dimensional hand carved ice creations, slippery ice slides (which you get to go down) and memorable holiday scenes, including a signature scene, a life-size nativity carved completely out of ice.

If you plan to visit ICE! in the evenings, Gaylord Palms presents “Luminescence: A Christmas Fantasy” each night in the atrium. This live stage show will feature holiday characters and seasonal music. Another event taking place will be the “Lights Alive” light show. Watch as holiday tunes play in synch with the light displays.   There is also an ice rink outside in tent for those brave enough to give it a go! Skate rentals are included in the ticket price.

ICE is open daily from 17 November 08-4 January 09, including holidays.  Exact times can be found on their website http://www.gaylordhotels.com.  Tickets can also be purchased in advance at a slightly reduced rate from their site, starting from $16.99.  Parking is additional, but you sometimes find discount vouchers in Walgreeens and other outlet centres.

We visited this attraction Chritmas 2006 during our holiday and my two children absolutely loved it.  It was very strange to go into somewhere so cold, when it was so warm and sunny outside.  You really appreciate the coats that they provide as it is extremely cold in there.  Make sure you do wear warmer clothes as you definately require them.  My children especially loved the ice slides which they could go down on their own, or with their dad!  You get your photo taken upon entry to the attraction and get the chance to purchase it in the shop afterwards.  We did buy ours as a reminder of our visit - this was something completely different and the kids found it a lot of fun.

In fact when you finished seeing ICE!, there is lots of other great things to see/do at Gaylor Palms.  You can warm up with a cup of hot cocoa, go ice skating, look at the large Christmas Tree, or even have lunch/dinner in one of the many eating places.  You may even like to take your children to visit Santa!

Last year we decided to splash out and go to Disney’s Magic Kingdom during our pre- Christmas holiday. What an amazing time we had. Having visited Magic Kingdom on several other occassions at different times of the year and been mesmorised, we did not realise how MORE Special the Christmas Parades are. We have just found out this years dates (Nov/Dec) and would most definetly recommend to all visitors this November/December, whether old or new to make the effort to be there during your stay. You can join in the whole spirit of things and make it a Xmas to remember. You will be amazed at Mickey’s Once Upon a Christmastime Parade, the fireworks seem all the more spectacular along with the So Happy Atmosphere. This sensational celebration was made all the more special with THE SNOW Falling On Main Street, The Special Christmas Parade, The Castle Dream Lights and Free Cookies and Hot Cocoa, they seem to think of everything.

We booked our tickets in advance and saved a few Dollars.

We say, Go ON, Spoil Yourselves & The Kids, you will not regret it.

  • Christmas in Florida

We have spent 2 Christmas holidays in Florida, both of which were memorable. On the first occasion we spent 4 nights on a Bahamas cruise with Royal Caribbean. The ship was beautifully decorated for the season with Christmas trees in various themes on each deck. After that we returned to spend Christmas in our villa, we bought a tree with all the lights already in place to make it easy for future guests to use, we also had an 8′ inflatable snowman on the front lawn! This was very subtle compared to some of the neighbouring houses and we drove round the community at night so that the kids could see all the fabulouus lights on peoples houses. Sometimes the decorations and Christmas carols playing in the theme parks seemed a little incongruous with the warm weather and sunshine but we got used to it, we were the only people in shorts & T-shirts in Universal Studios one bright sunny day, the locals were all wearing coats & hats! The parks really go to town with the trimmings and Christmas trees. On both occasions we had Christmas lunch at the Renaissance hotel opposite Seaworld. This was recommended by friends and was a really good choice. We went for the lunchtime option which started with brunch and carried on into the afternoon with a wonderful buffet. There were 13 of us one year and there was something for everyone, Christmas lunch with all the trimmings or pizzas and burgers, puddings desserts, ice creams, soups and as much sparkling wine as you wanted. It was really good value at that time, $40 for adults and $20 for children. It was then back to the villa to relax around the pool, too full to do anything else! How wonderful it was to be sitting outside by the pool deck on Christmas Day. The weather was really good to us, the only time it rained on our 2nd visit was Christmas Eve & New Years Eve. On both occasions we were in Magic Kingdom and Epcot respectively hoping to see the fireworks when instead we were drowned by torrential rain and ended up sloshing back to the car in ankle deep water. Frosty the Snowman is now in the loft until our next Christmas visit.

    Ice Sculptures

A truly enchanting Christmas is created at the Gaylords Palms Resort (6000 W. Osceola Parkway, Kissimmee, Florida), called ICE!

From late November until early January, there is an enormous ice carving on display. Two million pounds of ice is hand-carved into a truly spectacular Christmas winter wonderland. The carvings are done by a team of 40 artisans who visit from Harbin China every year, and it is a pleasure to be able to view their artwork on display at this venue - one of only a few places in North America.

Wrap up warm though; the ice carvings are kept at a chilly 9 degrees

Christmas 2007 heralded the carving of a candy house, ice cream sundae and giant frostproof express locomotive.  There were icy slides to try out (for the young and young at heart), as well as an outdoor ice rink, and of course, Santa comes to visit.  Another added attraction was the Hidden Holiday Gnome Hunt – 20 gnomes hidden throughout the resort presented a unique challenge.

There was also a live stage show ‘Luminessence – A Christmas Fantasy’ and a synchronized laser light show.

Christmas plans are announced in August on the Gaylord Palms Resort website  www.gaylordpalms.com/ice, where you can purchase your tickets (or phone (407) 586 0000).

2007 prices were $12.99 for ICE, and $7.99 for ice skating (when purchased with ICE ticket)

    Sand Sculptures

Gaylord Palms Resort also features an evolving array of sand sculptures in their Key West atrium.

Blocks of building sand are sculpted into figurines, which are then sprayed with a thin coat of diluted Elmer’s Glue to keep the moisture within the sand.

2 tons of sand is used to create the sand displays and it takes about 3 days, and 60 working hours, to create each sculpture.  With the sculptures being kept in the weather-shielding atrium, they are able to be preserved for approximately 6 months.  However, they are continually updated - at least several times a year.

The artists who create the displays have won local, state and international honours for their works

Events are open to day ticket holders as well as inclusive for hotel guests.

    Christmas Things To Do

If you get the opportunity to visit Florida during the Christmas season, then you are in for a treat. Most of the theme parks kick off their Christmas festivities immediately after Thanksgiving and most continue until the first week in January.

A lot of the celebrations are included in the normal theme park ticket price so you can enjoy the extra entertainment at no extra charge. The only exception is the night time Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party at Magic Kingdom which is by separate ticket admission.

Even if you are not visiting the theme parks, there is still plenty to enjoy with Christmas tree lighting ceremonies, float parades, carollers, music concerts and lighted boat parades in many towns throughout Florida.

Though it is rare for much snow to fall in Florida, there is plenty of opportunity to see snow at a number of special events including Disney’s town Celebration, Naples and Lake City. There is also the amazing ICE! at Gaylord Palms attraction in Orlando where nearly two million pounds of ice are carved into spectacular scenes.

Of course if you are able to stay until January, then you also have all the exciting New Year’s Eve parties and celebrations to look forward to as well.

Have an extra Special Christmas Holiday
