ICE! at Gaylord Palms - Fancy Visiting a Different Attraction this Christmas Period?
Posted on April 5th, 2009 No commentsWritten by: Michele Chamberlain
Authors WebsiteIf you are visiting Orlando over the Christmas period and would like a break from Disney, or just fancy something completely different, why not visit the Ice attraction at Gaylor Palms Resort and Convention Centre. ICE is a exhibit of winter wonderland made out of nearly Two Million Pounds of Ice and kept at 9 degrees Fahrenheit. Be prepared and dress appropriately: closed-toe shoes and trousers are required. Hooded oversized parker coats are provided for your warmth and comfort inside the attraction - you may look silly wearing them, but believe me you do need them!
Experience three-dimensional hand carved ice creations, slippery ice slides (which you get to go down) and memorable holiday scenes, including a signature scene, a life-size nativity carved completely out of ice.
If you plan to visit ICE! in the evenings, Gaylord Palms presents “Luminescence: A Christmas Fantasy” each night in the atrium. This live stage show will feature holiday characters and seasonal music. Another event taking place will be the “Lights Alive” light show. Watch as holiday tunes play in synch with the light displays. There is also an ice rink outside in tent for those brave enough to give it a go! Skate rentals are included in the ticket price.
ICE is open daily from 17 November 08-4 January 09, including holidays. Exact times can be found on their website http://www.gaylordhotels.com. Tickets can also be purchased in advance at a slightly reduced rate from their site, starting from $16.99. Parking is additional, but you sometimes find discount vouchers in Walgreeens and other outlet centres.
We visited this attraction Chritmas 2006 during our holiday and my two children absolutely loved it. It was very strange to go into somewhere so cold, when it was so warm and sunny outside. You really appreciate the coats that they provide as it is extremely cold in there. Make sure you do wear warmer clothes as you definately require them. My children especially loved the ice slides which they could go down on their own, or with their dad! You get your photo taken upon entry to the attraction and get the chance to purchase it in the shop afterwards. We did buy ours as a reminder of our visit - this was something completely different and the kids found it a lot of fun.
In fact when you finished seeing ICE!, there is lots of other great things to see/do at Gaylor Palms. You can warm up with a cup of hot cocoa, go ice skating, look at the large Christmas Tree, or even have lunch/dinner in one of the many eating places. You may even like to take your children to visit Santa! -
Grand China Buffet

Authors WebsiteThere are a huge variety of restaurants to try on a visit to Orlando. Many are household names, chains that are famous both in the UK and USA. Restaurants in the US always offer value for money in both their pricing and portion size. Some offer free meals for kids or have two for one promotions on tortillas ect. If you are looking for a nice restaurant that gives you value for your depleting dollar think about opting for chinese buffet.
I was amazed to see the value for money you get by paying a visit to The Grand China Buffet. Located on US27 this restaurant is set back from the main road next to Perkins. It is an all you can eat restaurant with a wide variety of dishes. The restaurant is generally busy used by both local residents and tourists alike and caters for both takeaways and eat in.
For a very low price you can visit the buffet as many times as you want and can sample soups, noodles, rice, meat and seafood dishes. At the weekend for a dollar or two more you can eat prime rib and crab. They have a choice of both hot and cold starters and there is fruit, salad and icecream available. Everything is laid out on hot plates and the food is replenished throughout the night so does not become cold. The staff are helpful and friendly and are very quick to offer you a free refills of soda as soon as your glass is getting low. There is also wine and a choice of beers available.
You are not rushed at all. One particular night we were one of the last tables to leave. Although the staff were clearing and cleaning and clearly wanting to go home no one was allowed to leave whilst customers were still in the restaurant. The staff meticulously wiped the hot plate down and disinfected everything .The floors are swept by hand. When you do request the bill it is brought to your table along with with fortune cookies containing curious statements or amusing messages. If you are a fan of chinese food or simply looking for a night out that wont break the bank give the Grand China Buffet a go, you may be pleasantly suprised.

Manny’s Chophouse - One of our favourite places to eat in Florida
Posted on April 5th, 2009 No commentsWritten by: Iain & Gillian Thompson
Authors WebsiteMannys Chophouse is a great restaurant that is located at Haines City down near Southern Dunes on H27. All the locals go to eat there so you know its good food that is reasonably priced. It is described as “a fun, casual family friendly chophouse that serves “Just Simple Good Food”, You won’t go home hungry or broke, You’ll just go home happy!”. If you are going to eat out during your holiday in Florida, then try this place at least once.
Its always busy so you really need to try and book in advance because if you just turn up, you might be in for a long wait, although I have visited a couple of times and have managed to get a table immediately. They don’t open at lunch time, only evenings and they have special offers such as a daily ‘Happy Hour’ 4 till 7 for the drinks and ‘Fajitas’ on a buy 1 get 1 free offer every Weds which is fabulous value at just $9.99 for 2 people.
The menu is quite extensive and everything is reasonably priced. They have everything from soups and salads to steaks, fish and burgers. I’ve got to be honest, that this isn’t a place for a vegetarian to go. The only thing on the menu that wasn’t meat related apart from the salad was a mushroom burger. They also have a big fridge as you enter the door full of raw steaks. When you sit down the waitress comes to your table and introduces herself by writing her name on the table upside down which amazes us how they can write it but its the right way up for us to read. I have always found the waiters and waitresses to be polite and very good at keep coming back to check everything is OK and bringing free refils for the drinks. After you have chosen what you want to eat, the waitress brings an enormous bowl of their famous bottomless house salad that even my non-salad eating hubbie eats, along with some hot bread rolls and cinnamon butter. These are free if you have ordered dinner off the menu so don’t order salad for starters!!!The only trouble with this is that I fill myself up on the salad and rolls because they are so tasty and then I can never finish my dinner. But they thoughtfully will bring take-away boxes for you to put your dinner in if you can’t finish it.
Hubby usually has a Rib Eye Steak done medium rare, my son usually has the Ribs, our daughter always has a Burger and Fries and I have Lamb or Pork Chops, Chicken or anything else if it takes my fancy. They also have lots of different fish to order: Salmon, Grouper, Flounder & Shrimp. Its really good value with a 1/4 pound Cheeseburger with fries and salad at just $6.68
The desserts are delicious. They do Florida Key Lime Pie, Cheesecake, Apple & Cherry Pies, Parfait and a Peanut Butter Pie plus their special: Mannys Chocolatehouse Slide which is enormous and is definitely for sharing. It has chocoltae Fudge Brownies, Vanilla Icecream, Chocolate Fudge Icecream, Hot Fudge sauce and nuts and comes in a great big glass bowl.
The opening times are 4-10pm Monday to Thursday, 4-10.30pm Friday and Saturday and Sunday 12noon to 9.30pm. They don’t take reservations but you can call ahead on 863-422-3910 to get your name on the list.

Florida - A Fantastic Holiday for Everyone and Great Weather!

Authors WebsiteWhy Florida?
Having owned a villa now near Disney for 3 years and just about to buy another on the coast, it’s the most relaxing place with so much to offer.
With Disney, MGM, Epcot, Seaworld, Aquatica, Typhoon Lagoon, Blizzard Beach, Kennedy Space Centre, shopping malls, dinner shows, air boat rides, golf, hot air balloon rides, horse riding and many great restaurants, there is something for everyone.
Ideal for all age groups and the sort of place even the adults can get away with acting like children!
Driving here is easy and seems very stress free. There are some bike trails, so you can explore by bike too.
All over Florida there are fabulous golf courses for those golf lovers out there and you can even get served cold drinks as you go round the course to keep you cool in the heat.
If you are lucky enough to rent a home with a pool and spa, you can relax after a long day at the parks.
People often ask my advice about Florida and where to visit and what to do, once I start on the subject, I can talk for hours!

Universal City Walk
Posted on April 5th, 2009 No commentsWritten by: Guy Gore
Authors WebsiteDisney and Universal are two of the major reasons for planning a vacation to Central Florida (as well, as the weather, shopping, golf, restaurants etc). For several years Disney were able to offer evening entertainment outside their theme parks through the clubs, shops and restaurants at Downtown Disney (or Marketplace) and Pleasure Island.
So Universal CityWalk was created to provide evening entertainment for visitors to Universal Studios and Islands Of Adventure. Many visitors walk through CityWalk, as it is situated between the car parks and theme park entrances, and provides facilities which rival those at Downtown Disney.
Entertainment
Regular live concerts are scheduled at Hard Rock Live, featuring local, national and international artists. This is one of the major venues for live music, along with The House of Blues at Downtown Disney. There are also options for jazz music (at Cityjazz), reggae (Bob Marley - A Tribute to Freedom), dance (The Groove) - so plenty of choice, whatever your taste in music. Check out what is on in the local newspapers. To supplement live entertainment, there is also a multi-screen cinema (or theater). Take your choice from 20 screens to catch the latest blockbuster - for European visitors some of these films may not yet have been released at home. A combination ticket is offered, to include a visit to the cinema and a meal at one of the many restaurants. Talking of which…..
Restaurants
We have already mentioned Bob Marley’s and the Hard Rock - but the list doesn’t stop there. Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville is themed around the songs by the singer of the same name, whilst sports fans are not forgotten - at the NBA City and NASCAR restaurants. NBA features films and the story of basketball, whilst NASACR is themed around the motor racing sport of the same name.Shopping
There are also plenty of opportunities to spend a few dollars whilst walking through CityWalk. Several stores offer Universal-related merchandise, whilst there are also surfwear stores, Fossil - and an entire store dedicated to merchandise relating to endangered species.Car Parking
It is necessary to pay to park in the huge Universal car parks if arriving during the day - although parking is free during the evenings. As most of the entertainment is geared towards evenings, this doesn’t present a problem. It is situated close to International Drive, so a brisk walk is also an option.CityWalk or Downtown Disney
It will come as no surprise to discover that both of these companies present their entertainment offering superbly. We recommend having a look during the day when visiting the other parks, and deciding which appeals more to you. The likelihood is you will wish to visit both - as you would expect, additional charges are made for some of the entertainment on offer. -
Celebration Tavern
Posted on April 5th, 2009 No commentsWritten by: Patty Bensur
Authors WebsiteWe had not been to Celebration since it was first being developed and on this trip to Florida, we had decided to visit as we had heard how beautiful it is and also how lovely the shops and restaurants are. Well, shortly before our trip, my husband began a new venture with some new clients. One of them just happened to own the Celebration Town Tavern and my husband said we really needed to stop there for dinner. Incidentally, when we asked our property manager about it, she told us that it was one of her favorite places to eat.
We arrived in Orlando around 2:00 p.m. and since this restaurant serves all day long unlike many that we enjoy going to, it seemed like a good time. There were very few people when we arrived and judging from our experience, if we had gone later, we would have waited in line down the street! This was confirmed during our chat with my husband’s colleague and his wife who were very hospitable I might add!
Being that we aren’t drinkers, I can’t really comment on the beverage selection, but I did browse the list and saw that the choices were many and some very unusual. I can see why this tavern is a popular night spot.
I can comment on the food, though! We asked the waitress what the specialties were and she told us that the Clam Chowder was rated #1 and was supposed to be even better than what you would have in Boston (which is where the owners are from). I’m not a big fan of clam chowder, but the other 4 members of my family are and so they all ordered it and they all agreed that it was the best they ever had! The other recommendation was the onion rings so we had those as an appetizer and they were great!
The menu was varied with a nice selection of salads, burgers, pastas, seafood and steaks. My husband and I split the Pasta Primavera which was very good. My son ordered Boston Scrod baked with a bread crumb topping. This is one of his favorite dishes at home and he told me that this was almost as good as mine (that’s high praise if I do say so myself)! My son’s favorite thing about this place is that he got to watch the college football games on the big screen while he ate. One of my daughters had a burger which she loved and my other daughter ordered a seafood platter with scallops and clam strips – very fresh.
The desserts were all home-made and choosing wasn’t easy. We opted for Boston Crème Pie and it was delicious. I look forward to visiting the Celebration Town Tavern again very soon!
